Biography
Dr. Mulusew Asferaw received his M.D in 2003 and a post-graduate degree of specialization in Ophthalmology in 2010 from Addis Ababa University (AAU), Faculty of Medicine. He received his sub-specialization in Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus from CCBRT Disability Hospital, Tanzania, and Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in Nepal in 2014. He has further training in phacoemulsification cataract surgery, oculoplastics surgery, ocular ultrasonography, and collaborative research. He received a Certificate of training on Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and pediatric retinal diseases, from Aravind Eye hospital and postgraduate institute of Ophthalmology, Coimbatore, India in 2017.
He worked in the Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine, the University of Gondar as a lecturer from 2004 -2006, and later as an assistant professor of Ophthalmology until 2015. He has 16+ years of experience in clinical, academic, and research fields.
He served as the head of the pediatric ophthalmology unit of Gondar University hospital and participated as a member of the management committee for a childhood blindness prevention project in Northwest Ethiopia in partnership with ORBIS International Ethiopia. He was the first pediatric Ophthalmologist at the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Gondar and established a fully functional pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus clinic at Gondar university hospital.
He also actively participated in rural cataract surgery outreach programs of the department of ophthalmology at Gondar in partnership with ORBIS, Light for the world, Soliel de Afrique, and Himalayan cataract project. He has been actively participating in various research projects and received British Counsel for Prevention of Blindness (BCPB) research mentorship Award to conduct research on childhood blindness and pediatric cataract surgical services in Ethiopia.
Publication
Dr. Mulusew Asferaw has research publications at various national and international peer-reviewed medical journals including BMJ Global Health and British Journal of Ophthalmology. He is currently working on CHICOE research project, which is a multicenter national collaborative research on children’s improvement in cataract surgery outcomes in Ethiopia. His latest publication is on retinopathy of prematurity in Ethiopia – the first report of ROP in Ethiopia.
He served at WGGA Eye Center as consultant pediatric ophthalmologist from 2015 – April 2020. He was the medical director of WGGA Eye center for the last 1 year. Currently, he joined ROHA Specialized Eye Clinic and is an honorary assistant professor of pediatric Ophthalmologist at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College.
He is a member of several foreign and domestic specialist associations and he actively participates in their congresses every year.
